Mass Expulsion Was Once a Taboo Idea in Europe. Then Came MAGA

A liberal take As Greg Bovino strode towards the stage, the crowd erupted into chants: “USA! USA! USA!” It was late May, several months since Bovino’s ignoble ousting as the greatcoat-clad “commander at large” of US border control. But for this audience, Bovino’s record was not a liability. It was his calling card. In Figueira da Foz, a sleepy Portuguese beach town just south of Porto, a few hundred of Europe’s most important far-right influencers, decision makers and activists had gathered for the “Remigration Summit”.  A gathering to strategise how to expel millions of migrants deemed ethnically “unsuitable” from Europe, by force or encouragement, including those legally settled. The Americans — not just Bovino but several dozen, including Stefano Forte, president of the New York Young Republican Club — were the guests of honour. Remigration, Bovino told his audience, is the defining political issue of our time. “I’ll make you a deal, Europe,” he said. “We get this remigration un...

Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and the Pinnacle of Capitalist 'Civilisation'

In 2025,  Elon Musk  received the median Tesla worker’s pay every 4.23 seconds. He received  over 2.5m times as much compensation at  Tesla  as the company’s average worker. The report also looks at  Donald Trump ’s  income  in 2025. At  $2.2bn , largely from his crypto holdings, Trump’s income rose nearly 254% from 2024. The median US worker would require 43,154 years to earn what Trump received in 2025. That's what the far-right and the neofascists applaud and justify, including their support of imperialist aggressions.

'Xenophobia Is As American As Apple Pie'

Although aassociated with the U.S., apple pie's origin is England. “ Targeting vulnerable foreign students or migrant labourers for harassment , abuse and deportation is second nature to US ruling regimes - as American as their sugar-infested apple pie… “President Donald Trump did not invent this particular brand of American cruelty; he is just carrying it to its vicious ends. There is now a systematic crescendo of demonising Trump by the entire institution of liberal imperialism. Embarrassed by his refreshing vulgarity, they are using it as camouflage to exonerate the rest of American history - as if it was a haven of grace, kindness and generosity towards foreigners. “Trump is simply using the precedent set by previous presidents, from Carter to Obama, against people with a moral compass.”

Trump the ‘White Slaver’

"You can try to carry out a coup with your economic strength and your arrogance, like they did with Allende. But I will die in my law, I resisted torture and I resist you," [the Colombian president Gustavo] Petro said , referring to former Chilean socialist President Salvatore [sic] Allende, who was overthrown with the help of the US.

Trump: A Calamity or a Problem?

‘Be honest’, Dimon said, ‘He [Trump] was kind of right about NATO, kind of right on immigration. He grew the economy quite well. Trade. Tax reform worked. He was right about some of China.’ —Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JP Morgan In other words, classic liberal-capitalist policies,  à l’américaine . This is why  Trump continues to be a problem and not just a calamity .”

US

Written in June: The candidate who emerged from this jumble of discontent was the man who promised to do the least. His party is now preparing to give us a national election that will be little more than a referendum on the hated Donald Trump. Finally we have a climate in which the American public would unquestionably choose dramatic change were it offered to them, and the party of change has contrived to ensure that it will not be offered. Instead our choice is between two elderly and conservative white men, both with a history of stretching the truth, both with sexual harassment accusations hanging over them, and neither representing any possibility of energetic democratic reform. The old order has been miraculously rescued once again. Such is the climate of opinion in America that, with the right leader, remarkable things would be possible. Instead we are presented with Joe Biden, an affable DC veteran with a hand in many of the defining disasters of the last 30 years: worker-c...

US

“It’s clear that Trump’s strategy of polarisation on the basis of a far-right agenda has allowed him to strengthen and expand his popular base. Whoever scrapes into the White House, the US is going to be very hard to govern on the basis of the liberal internationalism that has served big capital so well since WWII. The crisis of the neoliberal version of this hegemony that started under George W. Bush with Iraq and the Global Financial Crisis is going to intensify.” —Alex Callinicos, 04 November 2020
