I have just finished reading The Man Who Loved Dogs by Leonardo Padura, in its English translation. It is a great novel. I wish I could read it in Spanish.
He was an antidote to the likes of Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver Bourdain’s political transformation happened on the road to Beirut. He landed there in 2006, days before Israel bombarded the city. The episode is a verite documentary of a society upended in an instant. Lebanese journalist  Kim Ghattas  says that as a result, “Bourdain developed a new approach that used conversations about food to tell the story and politics of the countries he visited in ways that hard news couldn’t.” Anthony Bourdain (1956-2018)
According to a U.S. army strategist: "In sum, U.S. policy in the Middle East is confused, contradictory, counterproductive, and dangerous. It could leave Washington involved in a war with Iran. (And given our recent wars in the region, imagine where that’s likely to land us.)" The worry is what would a war with Iran cost the U.S. Who cares of what would cost the Iranians? Cuba ‘Diary’ of a Solo Traveller (2015)

11 hours flight to Bogotoa + 5 hours stop in Bogota airport + 3 hours flight to Havana  Update: As of January 2021 Cuba adopted one currency instead of two. Havana: Día 1, 27 Augosto 2015, arrived after 3pm. It took about half an hour to get the luggage at the airport. One dog sniffs some people's stuff for drugs. Some Cubans returning with big boxes. Apparently, they bring with them goods to sell. Day 1: Very hot, shops around where I stayed and close to Cemeterio Colon are very small. One is half empty, one doesn't sell big bottles of water. Took photos around the Cemeterio untill Platza la Revolucion. Lacked sleep and very tired. Went to bed early. Havana, Cuba. A photo by Nèdeem M.
